Welcome to the latest update on Xandeum, the innovative storage layer for the Solana blockchain. We're excited to share the progress on version 0.5, known as the Ingolstadt release, and give you a sneak peek at what's coming in version 0.6, the Stuttgart release. Whether you're new to Xandeum or a seasoned supporter, this post will break down what's happening in a clear and simple way.
What is Xandeum?
Xandeum is a storage solution built for the Solana blockchain, designed to handle massive amounts of data think exabytes! It works like a file system, allowing smart contracts to store and update data easily. Unlike traditional storage, Xandeum offers unlimited scalability and is being developed openly with the community. If you're curious about joining or learning more, head over to xandeum.network.
Version 0.4: Where We Are Now
We're currently on version 0.4, also called the Herrenberg release. This version introduced reconstructibility from pods, meaning the system can rebuild data stored across provider nodes (pNodes). The technical work is complete, and we're finalizing documentation to help developers build on this release. If you're running a pNode or thinking about it, this is a great time to get involved!
Version 0.5: Ingolstadt Release Coming Soon!
The Ingolstadt release (version 0.5) is nearly ready and brings some exciting updates. Here's what you can expect:
pNode Monitoring and Metrics: If you run a pNode (the nodes that provide storage for Xandeum), version 0.5 will track your node's performance. This includes checking if your node is online, responding to heartbeat requests, and handling data requests correctly. These metrics ensure the network runs smoothly and fairly.
Rewards for pNode Operators: Running a pNode comes with rewards! In version 0.5, you'll earn initial rewards to compensate for your efforts. Later, when Xandeum launches on Solana's mainnet, you'll also earn "stoink" storage income from the network's usage.
Owner-Manager Model: This is a game-changer for accessibility. pNode owners can purchase licenses to operate nodes, while managers handle the technical setup and maintenance. A marketplace for managers will let anyone offer their services for a share of future storage income. This makes it easier for non-technical users to participate.
Demo App FS Onchain: We've launched a demo app called FS Onchain, similar to a Dropbox-style storage system. It lets you store files directly on the Xandeum storage layer, showing the power of our technology in action.
The Ingolstadt release is in its final testing phase, and we're thrilled to roll it out soon. If you don't have a pNode yet, visit xandeum.network to learn how to get started.
Version 0.6: Stuttgart Release A Big Leap Forward
The Stuttgart release (version 0.6) is where things get really exciting. This release will introduce redundancy and crash fault tolerance, making Xandeum a minimum viable product (MVP) ready for Solana's mainnet. Here's what that means:
Redundancy: Data in Xandeum is split into chunks called "pages" (currently 1 MB each). In version 0.6, these pages will be stored across multiple pNodes. Apps can choose their level of redundancy for example, storing data on 3, 5, or even 43 nodes. If one node fails, the data remains safe and accessible on others.
Crash Fault Tolerance: If a pNode stops working or sends incorrect data, Xandeum will automatically switch to another node. This is made possible through erasure codes, a technique similar to RAID drives, where data can be reconstructed from other nodes. This ensures your data is never lost, even if a node goes offline.
Preparing for Mainnet: Version 0.6 is a critical step toward launching Xandeum on Solana's mainnet, planned for later this year. This will mark the transition from a working prototype to a fully functional storage layer.
We're also working toward Byzantine fault tolerance in future releases to protect against malicious actors, but for the MVP, redundancy and crash fault tolerance are the priorities.
Why Run a pNode?
pNodes are the backbone of Xandeum's storage network. By running one, you help store data and earn rewards. Currently, about 150 pNodes are live, with 350 licenses sold. If you've purchased a license but haven't set up your node, now's the time! Join our Xandeum Discord for community support or to find a manager to help you get started.
Running a pNode on the devnet/testnet also gives you a head start. When Xandeum goes live on mainnet, licensed pNode operators will receive boosted rewards, making it a smart move to get involved now.
What's Next?
We're not stopping at storage. Soon, we'll unveil a major demo app focused on AI accountability. This app will showcase Xandeum's capabilities and bring real-world data storage needs to the network. Stay tuned for more details it's coming soon!
We're also encouraging developers to build pNode analytics platforms using the RPC interface in version 0.4. These platforms will display node performance, rewards, and more, creating new opportunities for the community to contribute.
A Note from the Team
The Xandeum Foundation, based in the Cayman Islands, is driving this project forward. Our new director, Anthony, is settling in, and we're excited to share more updates soon maybe even from the Cayman Islands! We're committed to transparency, compliance, and building a decentralized storage solution that's accessible to everyone.
Thank you for being part of the Xandeum journey. Whether you're a pNode operator, a developer, or just curious, we invite you to join our Discord community and explore xandeum.network for more information. Let's build the future of storage together!
